App Recuerdos

By Haug / Kaegi / Wetzel / Begrich

Chile as it exists today has its origins right in the heart of Santiago: The city’s centre has been the site of election victory celebrations and the fall of presidents, the site of marches, demonstrations, the visit of the Pope, and of people going about their own work and lives. Here, the streets are layered with memories, although today most of them have disappeared from sight.
For their project ‘AppRecuerdos’, Sonido Ciudad (Chile) and Rimini Protokoll (Haug/Kaegi/Wetzel) went on a quest for these memories. Rather than conduct interviews, they asked all kinds of people, ranging from a Minister of Economic Affairs to the owner of a kiosk, to share their memories and disseminate them across the city’s buildings, park benches and entrance ways. Over the course of a year, they accumulated content for this walkable archive, an invisible museum that will open its doors as part of the festival Santiago a Mil in January 2017.
By then, over 100 audio bubbles will have been distributed around the centre of Santiago. To listen to them, visitors will only need to download an app designed specifically for this project on their smartphones or borrow a phone at the project’s starting point at the GAM (Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral), which serves as the festival centre. Equipped with a phone and a map of the city, they can then begin their trip into history.
Familiar perceptions of the city will disappear under layer after layer of these oral histories that convert the city into a highly subjective archive – accessible through sound. Each visitor is invited to enter history on foot and, in the process, position themselves in it, as everyone will experience their very own version of ‘AppRecuerdos’, depending on their chosen route and its duration. In this sense, this walk-through audio-play functions as a type of exploratory excavation into time.
Saturday, January 7, 2017: Opening of ‘AppRecuerdos’ as part of the festival Santiago a Mil.
Launch of the english version of AppRecuerdos: Expected for January 14th 2017.
