100% Oulu
Oulu is the northernmost city in the EU, famous for its Air Guitar World Championships, with a total population of 216,152, 4% of whom are over 80 years old and 26% are married couples without children.
For statistical purposes, people are regularly converted into pie charts, bars and curves – which are then used for political arguments or economic cost-benefit strategies. What if these statistics were given faces?
100% Oulu takes the city's official statistics and gives them a human face by inviting a hundred of its residents onto the stage to represent the entire population of the region. Each of them also speaks for themselves: about their own lives, joys and concerns. 100% Oulu begins with the nomination of the first protagonist, who has the task of recruiting another person within 24 hours, who then recruits another, and so on – all according to set criteria that reflect the demographic composition of the region.
They answered questions in playful arrangements. They come together in ever-changing constellations. For example, we see the group of those who are looking for work, those who are in debt, those who put their money to work for them, those who own weapons and have been involved in armed conflicts, those who have been to prison and those who are in favour of the death penalty.
