Radio play by Helgard Haug and Daniel Wetzel

The „brave dentist Dr Maurer“ had performed extensive dental work on four RAF terrorists and Stammheim prisoners, which could not be paid for privately or by the state. Mrs Ensslin, mother of Gudrun, therefore appealed to over 50 famous Germans for donations. Claus Peymann, then director of the Staatstheater Stuttgart, donated a small sum and hung her appeal for donations on the whiteboard for the theatre’s in-house announcements. The incident was made public and the letters and newspaper articles were painstakingly archived: from condemnation, death threats, invective, solidarity and recognition, praise and critical dissociation, through to accusations of a self-image neurosis, these letters make the vox populi audible and reveal a precise cross-section of the nation’s mood in autumn 1977.
