100% Vienna

- A Statistical Chain Reaction

By Haug / Kaegi / Wetzel

As per 1 July 2009, Vienna had 1.693,570 inhabitants. As compared to the previous year, 69,901 were recorded as newcomers, 15,702 as deceased and 17,375 as new births. For statistical purposes, people are converted into pie wedges, bars and curves used in their turn for political arguments and economic cost-benefit strategies. What if these statistics were given faces? What if Vienna were represented onstage by 100 persons, a number chosen to yield statistically “correct” information? “Vienna in Figures”, figures made up of Viennese people. An accumulation that plays the role of our city, a chorus that has never rehearsed before, an impossible entity that combines and recombines in an endless series of new group pictures, ephemeral portraits of belonging and contrasting: a sea of voices as a geometric body on 100 square metres of stage. Each individual stands for approx. 16,935 inhabitants of Vienna. Contrary to other Rimini Protokoll projects, only one person is selected by the directors for 100 Percent Vienna. This person then chooses the next participant from the circle of his/her acquaintances (based on a grid of statistical values, e.g. sex, nationality, residential district); that second person chooses another, until arriving at 100 Viennese, or “100 Percent Vienna”.
